Overview

Set the clock forward fifty million years. The cities are reefs now, the coastlines have drowned and re-drowned, and humanity is a thin grey layer in the rock. Into the warm, sunlit shallows over those ruins, evolution has grown something new and strange: Necrosilva sapiens, a colonial reef-organism whose interlinked polyps form a single distributed nervous system — a coral that thinks.

Individually, a reefmind polyp is humble: a soft, photosymbiotic feeder much like an Earthly coral, fixing carbon through partner algae and netting plankton with its tentacles. But the colony is wired. Over deep time the lineage evolved conductive tissue threading polyp to polyp, then ganglia, then something genuinely cognitive — a slow, vast, distributed mind spread across a reef the size of a city, processing the world over minutes and hours rather than milliseconds. No single polyp is aware; the reef as a whole, arguably, is.

Its intelligence is alien in tempo and in kind. It does not move, hunt, or build tools; its cognition is turned inward and outward at once — modelling the tides, the seasons, the slow comings and goings of fish and storms, and, eerily, remembering. Reefminds encode information chemically and structurally in their own growth, laying down a kind of living archive in the calcium they secrete, so that an old colony is also a record — a coral that has grown its memories into the shape of the drowned human streets it overlays.

What such a mind thinks about, on its century-long thoughts, is unknowable. Reefminds 'communicate' between colonies by chemical plumes and slow bioluminescent pulses across the dark water, and where the old cities cluster, their reefs have grown into linked super-colonies — a slow, luminous archipelago of thought sprawled across humanity's grave, contemplating a planet that has long since forgotten the species whose ruins it uses for bones. It is the future Earth's cathedral and its philosopher both, grown from coral over the bones of a vanished world.

Necrosilva sapiens does not merely inhabit the drowned ruins; it metabolizes them. The colony's conductive tissue preferentially routes signals through the most conductive materials available—often the rusted rebar and copper wiring of the submerged human cities, effectively grafting its neural net onto the skeletal infrastructure of the dead civilization. This symbiotic integration allows the Reefmind to sense structural stress and chemical gradients with unprecedented precision, turning the city's architecture into a sensory organ. Its 'memories' are not just abstract chemical traces but physical topographies; a century of slow growth encodes the exact pulse of a storm or the migration of a school of fish as a microscopic alteration in the calcium lattice, readable only by the colony's own distributed sensors. Communication between super-colonies is not a broadcast but a slow, deliberate handshake of bioluminescent pulses and pheromone clouds that can take weeks to traverse the deep channels, a conversation measured in geological time rather than seconds.

Evolution

Descended from ordinary photosymbiotic reef corals. As warm post-human seas favoured ever-larger, longer-lived colonies, weak polyp-to-polyp signalling — originally just for coordinated feeding and defence — was elaborated, generation by generation, into conductive networks, ganglia, and finally genuine distributed cognition. Intelligence emerged not from a brain but from a colony scaling up its connections.
