On Aethelgard, the surface is a lethal paradox: bathed in the unfiltered, searing ultraviolet glare of a white dwarf, yet frozen solid at -180°C. Biology here cannot rely on fragile DNA or water-based solvents, nor can it afford the metabolic heat that would melt its own frozen trap. Ultraphaga gelida, the Neon Strider, has solved this by evolving a thick, opaque dermis packed with UV-absorbing pigments that convert radiation directly into chemical energy. It possesses no transparent lenses; instead, its skin glows with deep violet and electric blue hues, acting as a living solar array. The creature is a soft-bodied, muscular entity, supported by six tapered, hydrostatic limbs that grip the ice with heat-resistant pads. It does not glide on slime; it walks with deliberate, rhythmic steps, its body pulsing with internal fluid pressure to maintain structural integrity against the 1.4g gravity. The Neon Strider is a creature of slow, deliberate motion. Evolution

Over eons, multicellular aggregation favored organisms that could elevate their reaction chambers toward the light, eventually fusing into a single, mobile body with distinct locomotory limbs. The move from stationary mats to a walking form arose from the need to track shifting thermal plumes and avoid the localized radiation spikes caused by the white dwarf's erratic flares.

Anatomy

The organism features a distinct, bulbous 'Core-Body' composed of dense, UV-absorbing dermal tissue, glowing with internal bioluminescence. When a thermal anomaly (prey) is detected, it uses its sensory ridge to locate the source, then approaches and uses a specialized, acidic mouthpart to consume sub-surface vent organisms. It reproduces by budding, where a smaller, fully formed offspring detaches from the parent's side after a gestation period.
