Overview

On Ferrum IV, the sun is a brooding red eye that bleeds high-energy ultraviolet and X-ray flares. The dominant lifeform here is not a stationary flower, but the Flux-Strider: a low-slung, fleshy horror of deep bruised-violet and rust-red muscle. It possesses no rigid skeleton, no shell, and no crystalline structure. Instead, it is a bag of living meat, roughly the size of a large dog, supported by six thick, muscular stumps that drag its bulk across the iron dunes. Its most terrifying feature is its 'maw'—not a mouth for biting, but a massive, unrollable internal gut that can be everted through a slit in its back. This gut is lined with a translucent, gelatinous membrane rich in manganese-sulfur proteins. When a solar flare hits, the creature anchors itself, tears open its dorsal slit, and unspools this internal maw into the air, exposing its raw, pulsating biology to the radiation. The ionizing particles strike the exposed tissue, triggering a biological cascade that converts the energy directly into ATP, effectively 'eating' the storm. The creature's skin is thick, leathery, and cool to the touch, acting as a heat sink to prevent its own flesh from cooking. It has no eyes; its entire epidermis is a sensitive nerve-net that detects magnetic field shifts and particle density. To move, it contracts its six stumps in a wave-like motion, dragging its heavy, gelatinous body toward the next storm front. It is a creature of soft, wet meat, constantly at risk of desiccation, protected only by a thick, slime-coated cuticle that seals in moisture.

Evolution

Ancestors were simple, stationary mats of conductive slime that absorbed radiation. Selection pressure favored those that could move to chase storms, leading to the evolution of a motile, muscular body. The 'maw' evolved from a simple digestive tract that accidentally absorbed particles, eventually becoming a specialized, unrollable organ for direct energy harvesting, shedding the need for a rigid photosynthetic structure.

During quiet periods, it retracts the maw, seals the slit, and drags its heavy body across the dunes to find the next storm. It reproduces by releasing a cloud of heavy, radiation-resistant spores from its base, which settle and grow into new mats before developing legs.
