Overview

On Chromata, the 'sky' is a dense, methane-rich atmosphere where gravity is weak. Luminoculus volucris is not a balloon, but a muscular, soft-bodied predator. It generates hydrogen via geothermal electrolysis of water absorbed from vent mist, storing the gas in internal, flesh-lined bladders for buoyancy. Its body is dense and fleshy, covered in iridescent dermal scales that protect against the corrosive methane mist. It possesses a distinct, triangular head with electro-sensory pits, and six powerful, prehensile limbs used to steer and capture prey. It does not see light; it perceives pressure waves and electrical fields. Bioluminescence is strictly for mating and territorial display, flashing in complex patterns across its skin. It hunts by drifting silently on hydrogen currents, using its limbs to snatch passing gas-microbes or smaller drifters.

Evolution

Descended from benthic filter-feeders that colonized vent walls. As geothermal activity increased, a mutation allowed for internal hydrogen storage, enabling vertical migration. Limbs evolved from anchoring roots to steering paddles.
